Asian Stereotypes. Sometimes They Really Tick You Off. by Kevin Wang

Have you ever wondered why or how Asian stereotypes work? Maybe yes, maybe no, but this article will sort out your stereotype beliefs.

Asian Confusion!

Here’s one big stereotype right off the bat: everybody thinks “Asians” means Chinese people. Even Chinese people sometimes think that! It really annoys the heck out of some people.

Say your friend is guessing people you think of. If your hint is: ”He/she is Asian” the friend will automatically guess people from or descended from China, not India, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Jordan, Indonesia, Russia or Japan.

“Most people think Asians are just Chinese,” says Indian-American Aarushi Aggarwal. “And that makes me mad because my history comes from Asia, too.”

Small Eyes, Big Whys, And Huge Lies

Possibly the biggest known stereotypes for Asians is the “Small Eyes.” But people get it wrong again, because it’s actually just a Japanese, Korean and Chinese stereotype. No person would think  Indians or Lebanese  or Iranian people have small eyes.  You’ll understand this if you read the Asian confusion section of this article.

Chinese descendant Angela Chi says here: “I think that’s really mean, people can’t help how they look. I’m not saying they do have small eyes, but if they do, you shouldn’t mention it.”

The Big Brain Theory

“How come Zao Gong gets straight A+s and you don’t, Ha Shen Bao?” a person without an Asian as a parent might think an Asian parent might act when their child gets an 99.9% on their  last math test.

Here, American Jack Wuerfl tells us his  opinion: “It’s not totally true. I don’t know how that stereotype was brought up, but it is true a lot of Asians are smart.” His last part of his statement has some meaning to it.

While it is true that some Asian families push their children to study harder than many Non-Asians families, it ticks lots of Asians off when someone needs help with a math problem and goes to the stereotypical smart Asian who got a B instead of the stereotypical “dumb” non-Asian-American who got an A.

Why do we need these stereotypes at all? The world should make judgements on personality, if they are nice or help a lot of people. Stereotypes are a whole bunch of useless beliefs and are best never brought up.
