Ms. Harvey joined WMS as a teacher in the English department this year. I did an interview with her to welcome her to the school, and I want to share her answers!
How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching for about seven or eight years. I worked here right after college for two years as a teaching assistant, while I worked on my master’s degree. Then I got a job at a private school in Arlington. That led me to another job in Milford, and then right back home – about eight years of teaching.
Why did you decide to work in Wayland?
I’m from Wayland, I grew up here, and after leaving and experiencing different schools and districts, I realized how wonderful it is to work and have gone to school in Wayland. So I wanted to come home and connect with my roots.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to spend time with my family. I have a four year old daughter and a one year old son. We really enjoy traveling together as a family and taking time together.
Do you have any goals for teaching at Wayland this year?
Yeah! My biggest goal my first year here is to help my students find or continue to have a joy or love for reading. That’s my primary goal for this year.
Why did you decide to become a Lit Boost teacher?
I decided to become a Lit Boost teacher because I wanted students to find love in reading and writing. I hoped that by helping my students to see the joy in literacy, not only would they be successful across all their subject areas, but they would find happiness and comfort in reading a good book! Reading can allow us to find connections with others’ experiences, and also allow us to experience things across time, places (both real and imaginary!) and cultures. Writing allows us to express our ideas and share those with the world.
What was your first impression of the school as a teacher?
I was blown away by how welcoming other teachers were and the kids. It’s just such a nice environment to work in, and it was a really smooth and easy transition.
Do you hope to take part in any clubs or leadership positions?
I am getting involved with the 6th grade GSA, so I’ll be running that during B day lunches with Ms. Naughton, and I’m really excited about that. We’ll see what happens over the next few years.
What’s something you’d like to share about yourself?
Something I love to do is hiking. My husband and I used to go hiking at Acadia National Park a lot before we had kids. Hopefully when my kids get older, I can get back to that.
Welcome to WMS Ms. Harvey!
